Tutorial: Gemini
This tutorial connects UpBlue to Gemini, the AI assistant from Google. Afterwards you ask Gemini about your machines and production data in your normal Gemini chat. See MCP Server for what Gemini can and cannot do in UpBlue.
You need:
- A Google account with access to Gemini (gemini.google.com) that allows custom apps. On a work or school account, an administrator may have to allow this first.
- An UpBlue account with access to at least one organisation.
Google changes the Gemini menus often, and what is available differs per account. If a menu below looks different, see the Gemini help article Connect custom apps to Gemini .
Gemini on the web
Add UpBlue in the Gemini web app on a computer. You cannot add it in the mobile app.
Open the apps settings
Go to gemini.google.com and open the settings for apps (connected apps).
Add a custom app
Choose to add a custom app and enter the server URL:
https://mcp.upblue.io/mcpUse UpBlue as the name if Gemini asks for one.
Log in with your UpBlue account
The UpBlue login page opens. Log in with your normal UpBlue account and allow the access. You are sent back to Gemini.
Start a chat
In a new chat, make sure UpBlue is switched on and ask your first question:
Which UpBlue organisations do I have access to? Give a snapshot of the latest values in the first one.Once you have added UpBlue on the web, it is also available in the Gemini mobile app: log in on your phone with the same Google account.
Confirming changes
Gemini works with your own UpBlue permissions. Before a tool changes something in UpBlue, for example deploying a connection or updating an alert rule, read what Gemini is about to do and only say yes when it is what you want.
Example: compare two lines
In organisation "Factory Eindhoven", compare the output and the stops
of Line 1 and Line 2 over the last two weeks. Which line lost the most
time, and to which stop reasons?Gemini looks up the tags, queries the output per day, reads the events and their reasons, and compares the two lines. Ask follow-up questions in the same chat: “Show the stops of Line 2 on Tuesday.”
Gemini CLI
Gemini CLI is Gemini for the terminal, used by engineers and IT. Add UpBlue to ~/.gemini/settings.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"upblue": {
"httpUrl": "https://mcp.upblue.io/mcp"
}
}
}Then start Gemini CLI and log in through the browser:
/mcp auth upblue
