Tutorial: ChatGPT & OpenAI
This tutorial connects UpBlue to ChatGPT, the AI assistant from OpenAI. Afterwards you ask ChatGPT about your machines and production data in your normal ChatGPT chat. See MCP Server for what ChatGPT can and cannot do in UpBlue.
You need:
- A ChatGPT plan that allows custom MCP servers. Full support, including changes, is meant for Business, Enterprise and Edu; on those plans a workspace admin may have to switch on developer mode first.
- An UpBlue account with access to at least one organisation.
OpenAI changes the ChatGPT menus often, and what is available differs per plan. If a menu below looks different, search the ChatGPT help for “custom MCP server” or “developer mode”.
ChatGPT
Open the plugins page
In ChatGPT, open Plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins ). On a Business or Enterprise workspace, ask your admin to enable developer mode if you don’t see the option.
Add a custom MCP server
Click + → Add custom MCP server. Fill in:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | UpBlue |
| Description | Production data from UpBlue |
| Server URL | https://mcp.upblue.io/mcp |
| Authentication | OAuth (no credentials needed) |
Confirm the warning with I understand and want to continue and click Create as a plugin.
Install and log in
Install the plugin. The UpBlue login page opens: log in with your normal UpBlue account and allow the access. You are sent back to ChatGPT.
Start a chat
In a new chat, type @ and pick UpBlue. Ask your first question:
Which UpBlue organisations do I have access to? Give a snapshot of the latest values in the first one.Confirming changes
ChatGPT asks for confirmation before every tool that changes something in UpBlue, for example deploying a connection or updating an alert rule. You can remember your choice for the current conversation; a new conversation asks again. Read each question carefully: the change is made with your own UpBlue permissions.
Example: find the cause of a stop
In organisation "Factory Eindhoven", the filler on Line 1 stopped
yesterday afternoon. Look at the events and the temperature, pressure
and speed tags around that time and tell me what happened first.ChatGPT finds the events, queries the tags around the stop and explains the order of what happened. Ask it to turn the answer into a short report for maintenance.
Codex
Codex is OpenAI’s coding assistant for the terminal, used by engineers and IT. Add UpBlue to ~/.codex/config.toml:
[mcp_servers.upblue]
url = "https://mcp.upblue.io/mcp"Then log in through the browser:
codex mcp login upblue
