Tutorial: Claude

This tutorial connects UpBlue to Claude, the AI assistant from Anthropic. Afterwards you ask Claude about your machines and production data in your normal Claude chat. See MCP Server for what Claude can and cannot do in UpBlue.

You need:

  • A Claude account (claude.ai). Custom connectors work on every plan; the Free plan allows one.
  • An UpBlue account with access to at least one organisation.

Claude on the web and Claude Desktop

On Pro and Max you add the connector yourself. On Team and Enterprise an owner adds it once for the whole company; skip to Team and Enterprise.

Open the connector settings

In Claude, go to Customize → Connectors.

Add a custom connector

Click + Add → Add custom connector. Fill in:

FieldValue
NameUpBlue
Remote MCP server URLhttps://mcp.upblue.io/mcp

Click Continue, and Continue again on the authentication settings. Keep the default OAuth options and click Add.

Log in with your UpBlue account

Click Connect. The UpBlue login page opens. Log in with your normal UpBlue account and allow the access. You are sent back to Claude.

Start a chat

In a new chat, click + at the bottom left → Connectors and make sure UpBlue is switched on. Ask your first question:

Which UpBlue organisations do I have access to? Give a snapshot of the latest values in the first one.
💡

The connector also works in the Claude mobile app once you have added it on the web: log in on your phone with the same Claude account.

Team and Enterprise

An owner of the Claude organisation adds the connector once:

Add the connector for the organisation

Go to Organization settings → Connectors. Click Add → Custom → Web, enter the name UpBlue and the URL https://mcp.upblue.io/mcp, and click Add.

Every user connects

Each colleague goes to Customize → Connectors, finds UpBlue and clicks Connect. Everyone logs in with their own UpBlue account, so everyone keeps their own UpBlue permissions.

Tool permissions

When Claude uses an UpBlue tool for the first time, Claude asks for permission. For reading tools you can safely choose Allow always. For tools that change something (deploy a connection, delete a rule), keep the question on so you see each change before it happens.

⚠️

In Research mode Claude can call tools without asking. Switch off the UpBlue tools that write before you start a research task, or switch off the connector for that chat.

Example: a weekly production report

For organisation "Factory Eindhoven": give me the total output per line for last week, per day, and the three longest stops with their reason. Put it in a table and write a short summary for the Monday meeting.

Claude looks up the tags, queries the data per day, reads the events and their reasons, and writes the report. Ask follow-up questions in the same chat: “Why was Line 2 down on Wednesday?”

Claude Code

Claude Code is Claude for the terminal, used by engineers and IT. Add UpBlue with one command:

claude mcp add --transport http upblue https://mcp.upblue.io/mcp

Then start Claude Code, type /mcp, select upblue and log in through the browser.
